What Are My Breast Augmentation Options?

Today’s breast implants are made from either saline or silicone. Both implant types are approved as safe to use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and each breast implant option offers its own advantages. During your consultation, Dr. Killingsworth and his plastic surgery team can help you decide which type of breast implant is right for you.

  • Saline Breast Implants:

    Saline-filled implants are made of a silicone outer shell. They are made of a saltwater solution that is easily absorbed by the body in case of an implant rupture. Saline breast implants are filled after undergoing the implant placement, so they require a smaller incision. Saline-filled implants are slightly firmer, so they do have a greater chance of rippling.

  • Silicone Breast Implants:

    Silicone breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell filled with a thick, silicone gel. This type of implant is known for its natural appearance and feel, and there is less chance of visible rippling – although they do require a larger incision. Today’s silicone breast implants are safer and more natural-looking.

Breast augmentation surgery typically lasts one to two hours depending on the extent of the surgery. One of the most important operative decisions of breast augmentation is the forming of the implant pockets where your plastic surgeon will create space for your breast implants to be inserted. These pockets are the foundation for your new breasts and achieving proper structure requires a small release of the chest muscle.

After the incision is made, your breast implants will be inserted and this placement will determine the way the breasts will project themselves after your breast augmentation surgery. Placing the breast implant above the muscle (sub-glandular) can produce a more rounded, fuller look that many women choose even though it may not look as natural. Placing the implant underneath the chest wall muscle (sub-muscular) is more common and can achieve a natural, shaped look. After the implants have been inserted and positioned, the incisions will be stitched closed, taped, and bandaged. Within a few days, the bandages will be replaced with a surgical bra.
