Revision Breast Augmentation

Atlanta Plastic Surgery

At Astra Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, we offer breast implant revision to correct the results of a previous breast augmentation procedure. Breast implant surgery is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures among American women. Over time, though, some women become dissatisfied with the results of their breast augmentation. Dr. Christopher Killingsworth is a double board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Killingsworth, Dr. Farber, and their plastic surgery team specialize in breast implant revision to help patients achieve the breast enhancement results they always dreamed of.*

What is Breast Implant Revision?

Women choose breast surgery for many personal reasons, and when having a cosmetic procedure performed, no woman expects to be unsatisfied with the results. Feeling beautiful is very important, and at Astra Plastic Surgery, we offer breast implant revision in Atlanta to help change whatever is required to correct the problems or concerns you have with your breasts. While, in most cases, breast augmentation surgery is carefully planned and accurately carried out, changes can occur over time that require surgical revision.

The changes can be a result of problems with the actual breast implants themselves, or they can be natural changes to breast tissue due to aging, childbirth, or weight fluctuations. Breast implants are not guaranteed for life, and secondary surgery may be needed at some point in a breast augmentation patient.* Some women grow tired of the size of their implants. According to statistics from the FDA, switching to a larger size implant accounts for over a third of all breast revision surgeries in the United States. Many women considering breast augmentation fear that their breasts will be too large so they opt for smaller implants and when the post-operative swelling subsides, they wish they had larger breasts. For some older patients, women who had breast implants placed when they were younger are now at a different place in their life, and they want their implants removed.

Why Undergo Breast Implant Revision?

Plastic Surgeon in Atlanta, GA

Some of the common reasons women seek revision breast surgery include:

  • Implant Volume/Size: Some patients are unhappy with their breast size following breast augmentation and can undergo revision surgery to correct these concerns. With saline implants, your breast surgeon can add or remove saline to adjust breast size and improve symmetry. If you have silicone or gel implants, the volume is long-lasting and a new implant is required.*
  • Capsular Contracture: Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue surrounding the breast implant (the capsule) becomes unusually hard and creates distortion. The formation of scar tissue around a foreign object is part of your body’s natural healing process. However, if the capsule grows too thick and hardens, it can lead to pain, as well as a misshapen appearance. There are four grades of capsular contracture. In severe cases, you may need to have your breast implants removed and replaced.
  • Symmastia: Symmastia occurs when skin and muscle over the breastbone is cut or removed, causing breast implants to fall towards the center of the chest. This is also known as a “uniboob,” as the implants come together to form unnatural-looking cleavage. Symmastia can occur when breast implants are placed either under the muscle or under the gland. There are numerous surgical techniques to repair symmastia and restore natural-looking shape.
  • Bottoming Out: “Bottoming out” refers to breast asymmetries caused by a low inframammary fold. When this occurs, the nipples are positioned too high and the inframammary crease is too low, which can lead to an unnatural appearance. Bottoming out is common in patients who have very thin breast tissue. Corrective breast surgery can reposition the inframammary fold higher and reinforce the lower breast area to raise the breasts to a more youthful-looking position.
  • Ruptured Implants: Over time, breast implants may rupture due to a variety of circumstances. The breast implant may be underfilled, which can lead to friction; this can weaken the implant and cause a tear. Overfilling can also lead to a rupture, as the implant shell stretches and tears over time. Accidental trauma to the breast can also result in an implant rupture. Common signs of an implant tear include a decrease in breast size, asymmetry, pain, and swelling.
  • Lateral Displacement: Lateral displacement occurs when your implants fall too much to the sides (towards the armpits). This is often observed when patients are lying down. Corrective surgery can be performed to keep your breast implants in their correct position and prevent displacement.
