Keloid Removal Surgery

A keloid is defined as a thick, raised scar that can occur as the result of a skin injury. Oftentimes, patients see us to remove keloids that have formed on or around the earlobes after getting a piercing. However, keloids can also form on the shoulders, cheeks, and chest. Some patients are more prone to developing keloids than others, which may lead to multiple keloids surfacing or cause them to become abnormally large. At Astra Plastic Surgery, we perform keloid removal for patients who struggle with the appearance of one or multiple keloids.

What Is Keloid Removal?

A keloid is an overgrowth of tissue that can appear as a large mass of scar tissue that forms around wounds on the body, often surgical incisions, injuries, and piercings. Because keloids are comprised of collagen buildup, they are not medically necessary to remove. However, not only are keloids unsightly to look at, but they can also cause pain and irritation. Keloid removal is a procedure in which keloids are surgically cut from the body. During keloid removal surgery, our plastic surgeons can remove the keloid itself, as well as remove any excess scar tissue and reconstruct the surrounding skin for the best possible aesthetic outcome.

Unlike normal scars, keloids can become larger than the scar itself, especially in areas where the skin is subjected to high tension. Although there are many other treatments for keloids that can improve their size and appearance, such as medical dressings, prescription medications, laser surgery, and cryotherapy, keloid removal surgery has proven to be the most effective. When opting for less invasive options, surgical keloid removal offers the lowest chance of the keloid returning.

What Are The Benefits Of Keloid Removal?

Keloid removal surgery can alleviate any discomfort or insecurities caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue. Keloids can prevent patients from wearing earrings, and cause itching, pain, and general cosmetic discomfort in one’s appearance. While keloids can cause no symptoms in some cases, keloids that form in noticeable places such as the face, hands, ears, can cause patients to feel self-conscious. Although there are topical solutions available, to fully remove keloids it is best to consult with our plastic surgeons about keloid removal options. At Astra Plastic Surgery, we offer keloid removal for patients seeking improved self-esteem.

Am I An Ideal Candidate For Keloid Removal?

During your consultation for keloid removal in Atlanta, Dr. Killingsworth and his team of talented plastic surgeons will determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. The ideal candidate for keloid removal surgery is in good general health and a non-smoker. Additionally, it is important that patients have realistic expectations for the results of their keloid removal.

If you struggle from pain, irritation, or diminished self-confidence caused by a keloid scar, keloid removal surgery may be right for you. The keloid removal procedure can be customized to fit the needs of each individual patient. If you have active acne or other skin conditions in close proximity to the keloid, keloid removal surgery may not be right for you.

What Should I Expect During Keloid Removal?

Before undergoing keloid removal, patients will be administered a local anesthetic to ensure they remain comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Once numbed, Dr. Killingsworth and his team of plastic surgery professionals will strategically remove the keloid. Depending on the extent of the keloid, it may be flattened or removed completely. Once removed, any incisions will be closed with sutures.

Based on the severity of the keloid, Dr. Killingsworth and his team may choose to further treat the keloid with less invasive treatments after the majority of the keloid has been removed. By doing so, the chance of the keloid returning becomes much smaller. Although procedure times will vary on a case-to-case basis, keloid removal surgery usually takes less than an hour.

What Should I Expect After Keloid Removal?

After keloid removal surgery, patients are free to return home. Because keloid removal does not require general anesthesia, patients are able to drive themselves home following the procedure. Before sending you home, Dr. Killingsworth and his staff will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. It’s important that patients follow these instructions with care to minimize their recovery period and maximize their results.

After the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling and discomfort. However, patients are free to return to their daily activities. Patients should refrain from strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting. Patients should be able to resume these activities 1-2 weeks after the procedure. It is recommended that patients keep the treatment area clean and dry to minimize the risk of infection or returning keloids.

What Results Should I Expect From Keloid Removal?

Patients should be able to notice the results of their keloid removal surgery immediately after the procedure. Although keloids can be removed, the scar that remains underneath is permanent. Keloid removal eliminates the raised growth of tissue itself, but it cannot correct skin pigment or texture. However, the results will continue to improve over time as the treatment area heals and lightens. Patients who would like to further lighten the color or smooth the texture of their scar may choose to return for a scar revision procedure in the future.

In order to decrease the chance of keloid recurrence, our plastic surgeons may recommend additional, less invasive techniques to prevent the keloid from resurfacing. The treatment plan for removing keloids is individualized for each patient.

How Much Does Keloid Removal In Atlanta Cost?

Astra Plastic Surgery offers keloid removal for patients who struggle with keloids. The cost of keloid removal depends on a variety of factors. Because keloid removal is considered a cosmetic procedure, it will not be covered by insurance. We will provide you with the complete cost during your consultation. We accept payment by cash, personal check, credit card, CareCredit®, and Alphaeon® Credit financing.
