Atlanta Plastic Surgery

A facelift allows plastic surgeons to carefully and precisely address cosmetic concerns while maintaining a natural, youthful look. Your facial profile is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging. Lines, wrinkles, creases, and folds develop and detract from your appearance. At Astra Plastic Surgery, we offer facelifts in Atlanta for patients looking to reduce the prominence of facial aging.*

What is a Facelift?

More than any other body part, your face is the gateway for everyone you meet. Your facial profile reveals a lot of personal information about you, reflecting your age, heritage, and personality. It is understandable that you want your face to mirror how young you feel on the inside, but too often this is not the case.

As you age, your face loses volume and elasticity, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines, sagging cheeks, jowls, folds that appear around the neck, and deep creases that form between your nose and mouth. Besides the natural aging process, stress, sun damage, gravity, environmental factors, and even genetics can accentuate the effects of facial aging. Fortunately, thanks to modern technology and advanced surgical techniques, there are many facelift options available today that can restore youthfulness to your facial profile by treating sagging skin and enhancing contours.*

What Are The Benefits of a Facelift?

Plastic Surgeon in Atlanta, GA

A facelift can address many of the physical transformations that change your appearance as you age. At Astra Plastic Surgery, we offer numerous facelift techniques that can have a dramatic effect on your jawline, midface, and neck.

Facelift, or rhytidectomy, is designed to restore a more youthful appearance by tightening and lifting the deep tissues of your face to enhance your facial contours. “Rhytid” means wrinkle, and “ectomy” means removal, but the fact is a facelift does not remove wrinkles. Instead, a facelift removes excess skin and fat, while also re-draping the skin of your face and neck. A facelift also tightens and repositions the underlying muscles and deep connective tissues (known as the subcutaneous muscular aponeurotic system—SMAS) and the platysma neck muscle.

Am I a Candidate For a Facelift?

Each facelift procedure is highly individualized. During your consultation, our Atlanta facelift surgeons will examine your skin’s elasticity, underlying muscle tone, and bone structure to determine if your goals and expectations are realistic.

After evaluating your medical history and current health, you will be encouraged to ask questions and voice any concerns you may have before Dr. Killingsworth, Dr. Farber, and their plastic surgery team recommend a personal treatment plan to meet your specific needs. Since a facelift is not designed to improve skin texture, in some cases, the possibility of adding other facial procedures performed in conjunction with your facelift will be discussed. Defined facial features, visible contours, and natural angles that are proportional all create structural balance in your face. With the many different types of facelift techniques available, our facial plastic surgeons will work with you so that you are comfortable with the treatment plan we have chosen for you.*

What Are My Facelift Options?

At Astra Plastic Surgery, It starts with trust

As a leading Atlanta plastic surgeon, Dr. Killingsworth and his team are experienced in the most advanced techniques for a facelift, including:

Traditional Facelift:

A traditional facelift (or SMAS facelift) targets the lower face and neck. This facelift technique involves an incision in the hairline that starts above the ear, continues around the ear, and ends behind the ear. Through this incision, your facelift surgeon will extract skin from underlying fat and muscle and use sutures to lift the SMAS muscle layer toward the ears. This muscle tightening can provide longevity to your facelift results. Excess skin is also removed during a traditional facelift.

Deep Plane Facelift:

The deep plane facelift is a modified version of a traditional facelift. During this method, the deeper planes of the face are targeted to lift and reposition the muscle. Your facelift surgeon will also separate certain muscle layers from deeper facial structures to better address drooping skin. The deep plane facelift can achieve substantial results, but this technique also has a higher risk of injury to facial nerves.

Subperiosteal Facelift:

The subperiosteal facelift is performed at the very deepest layers of your facial structure. Named after the area directly above the facial bones, a subperiosteal facelift is more extensive than a traditional facelift or deep plane facelift.

Mid Facelift:

A mid facelift can target the cheeks to reduce the prominence of nasolabial folds. During a mid facelift, your facial plastic surgeon can treat sagging skin to accentuate cheek contours. The mid facelift is often a good alternative for patients looking to address the earliest signs of aging around the cheeks, nose, and upper lip.

Mini Facelift:

The mini facelift is a less invasive procedure that utilizes smaller incisions and can result in less healing time than a traditional facelift. Younger patients who have good skin elasticity may be ideal candidates for a mini facelift.

Short Scar Facelift:

There are various short scar facelift techniques that can accentuate facial contours. The S-Lift is a type of mini facelift that has been modified so that the incision is in an “S” shape named after Dr. Zia Saylan (the inventor’s last name).

This incision does not extend behind the ear. The S-Lift is ideal for patients with mild looseness of the jawline. This method can result in less downtime than a traditional facelift. The MACS Lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension Lift) and the Quick Lift are two versions of the S-Lift. These procedures are designed to treat mild skin laxity and can result in more downtime than the S-Lift. A short scar facelift may be ideal for patients in their forties or fifties who have moderate amounts of excess skin, but do not want to undergo a more invasive type of facelift.

Temporal Facelift:

The temporal facelift is designed to address the eyebrow area. During your temporal facelift, your facelift surgeon will lift sagging skin on the sides of your brows. This facelift technique is ideal for patients who have moderate drooping around the eyebrows.

Platysmaplasty:

Platysmaplasty surgery (or submentoplasty) can correct neck banding by targeting the platysma muscles. These muscles begin to protrude as you age, which can lead to the appearance of neck cords that run parallel down the neck. Platysmaplasty surgery can separate skin from the underlying muscle to reduce neck branding and achieve a smoother-looking appearance.

Endoscopic Facelift:

The endoscopic facelift technique uses innovative technology to help guide your surgery. During this procedure, an endoscope is used to transmit images of your facial structure from under the skin. A tiny camera is attached to a small probe and inserted beneath the skin, helping visualize the underlying facial tissues being treated.

After your facelift, the healing process is gradual and varies from patient-to-patient. You will need time to allow your face to settle into its new shape, and in some cases, a facelift can take up to six months to see the full results. Most patients feel they can return to work in approximately two weeks, but this is dependent on your healing capabilities, as some people take longer for the bruising to fade and stiffness to disappear.*

Additional Reading

Regardless of how careful you are throughout your life, your face registers the stresses of day-to-day living, and although a facelift cannot stop the aging process, it can significantly reduce the signs of aging. It is important to know that a facelift is not designed to change the look of your face or its features. Instead, it can diminish the effects of the passing years for a more refreshed and younger-looking appearance. While injectable fillers can help to reverse the early signs of facial aging, for more advanced signs and for longer-lasting results, a facelift may be a better choice.

A facelift can be combined with additional facial plastic surgery procedures, including a brow lift, neck lift, or eyelid surgery to further accentuate your facial profile.* In the past, most facelift procedures were essentially the same, but today with the many different variations, Our Atlanta facelift surgeons will customize your procedure to meet your individual lifestyle. Today, more and more patients are choosing to have a facelift because they want their appearance to reflect their vitality and positive outlook for living a longer life.**
