Now that you have decided to have breast augmentation, you get to choose the breast implants that will give you the desired look. Most women are familiar with the rounded silicone implants that were available when breast augmentation first grew in popularity, but today’s breast implants offer many more options.

#1 STYLE

The first choice you have is between silicone and saline implants. Both styles have shells that are made of silicone, so the difference is in the liquid inside the implant. Some considerations when choosing between silicone and saline implants are:

  • Silicone implants have a similar feel to natural breasts.
  • Although rare, both styles may leak, and silicone carries a greater risk because saline is absorbed easily by the body.
  • The FDA requires that women be at least 21 years old to have silicone implants.
  • Saline implants may require smaller incisions because the shells are filled once the implant is placed in the breast area.
  • Silicone breast implants are typically a better choice for women who are very petite, as well as those with small natural breasts.
  • If a saline implant leaks, it will collapse.
  • Silicone implants that leak may cause symptoms, such as discomfort and abnormalities in the shape of the breast.
  • Saline implants are ideal for women with asymmetrical breasts.

#2 SHAPE

Breast implants are available in round and teardrop shapes. Round implants give consistent fullness around the perimeter of the breast, whereas teardrop implants have more volume towards the bottom of the implant. Teardrop implants are more anatomically proportionate to natural breast shape. Teardrop implants are more prone to rotating inside the tissue pocket compared to round implants. Additionally, teardrop implants are always textured, and round implants can be smooth or textured.

#3 TEXTURE

Some breast implants have a textured surface to help the implant stay in place. The design may make your breasts feel firmer and less natural than a smooth implant. Studies have shown that women who have textured implants are at reduced risk for capsular contracture that occurs when scar tissue develops around the implant. Textured implants are also less likely to ripple compared to smooth implants.

#4 SIZE

When you choose the size of your implants, you have two considerations. You can find a size that is in proportionate with your body style, or you can go a little larger. This is a matter of personal preference, but you should consider the effects of having larger breasts. First, you will be carrying more weight on your torso. Not only will you need larger bras, but the weight can strain your back, neck and shoulders. Second, some women consider their professional environment and lifestyle before choosing breast implants that will make them significantly larger.
